Volunteer Opportunities
- Direct Patient Care: as a volunteer, you work with a diverse team to care for the physical, emotional, and practical needs of the patient and caregivers. All direct patient care Volunteers receive training on end-of-life issues that affect patients and their families. Volunteers are selected for this training based on their interest and ability to fulfill the commitment of service to Hospice patients and primary caregivers.
- Communications Team: we strive to answer phone and email inquiries daily. If you would like to volunteer for hospice but find it difficult to leave your home, this would be an excellent option for very helpful work! Call Line volunteers pick up messages from voicemail and then direct them to other volunteers responsible for the different service areas. No need to actually pick up the phone and speak with someone, just direct their inquiries appropriately. If this interests you, send an email to calls@hospiceofsanjuan.org to get full details
- Music and Art Therapy: many studies show that art and music contribute to daily hope and joy when someone struggles with pain or end-of-life symptoms. Share your artistic talents and improve someone's life! Become a Music&Memory volunteer and help bring music/joy to people who otherwise are shut in!
- Pet Care: folks stuck in their homes due to serious illness frequently worry about their beloved pets or miss having a pet to cuddle. If sitting with an ill person is not for you, how about helping them by walking their dog? or visiting homebound folks with YOUR well-trained and sociable pet for much-needed pet therapy?
- Education professionals: improved end-of-life care in any community depends upon good education. If you would like to teach classes, this is an ever evolving area that would benefit from your skills.
- Peer grief support: we offer peer grief support for the person facing death, or for those experiencing grief associated with death of a loved one or care-receiver. Volunteer for this if one of your life skills is listening.
- Board of Directors: if you have leadership skills, please consider joining us! we welcome diversity in our members, welcoming people with differing skill sets to provide guidance to the organization
- Community events, fund raising, and publicity: since we survive on donations, we welcome assistance with improving our income stream. Most of us shy away from "the ask", so please contact us if you excel at asking!
