Sometimes the best way to take care of someone else is to first take care of yourself. Read a book! Attend a class! Move your body!

Caregiving

San Juan Island offers several options for those seeking caregivers or help in the home.  The Joyce Sobel Family Resource Center, Mullis Community Center and EMS all offer outstanding programs.
If you wish to hire a caregiver, it's important to ask the right questions so that your needs are well matched to those of a trained caregiver. The Mullis Community Center maintains a list of community caregivers of varying backgrounds and skill sets, which is available upon request.  Call (360) 370-7520 for more information.

San Juan Island EMS now provides in-home primary care visits for people finding it challenging to go in for clinic visits. Caregivers help people stay in their homes despite conditions that otherwise would make them move off island or into institutional care. One of Hospice of San Juan's core services is Caregiver respite, which requires all new patient care volunteers to undergo training. This training takes place over one 7-hour day, with all sessions run by professionals.  Entrance is free and lunch is provided. Each training participant undergoes a background check as part of our screening process.
Topics include:
  • Understanding the relationship between Hospice of San Juan and Hospice of the Northwest
  • Maintaining confidentiality
  • Active listening and managing grief
  • Protecting your own body when caring for others
  • Presence in the face of death
  • Avoiding infections
